Wilmington, Delaware native
David Huber’s interest in music began early in life. Both of his parents played piano and listened to jazz, blues, boogie-woogie and classical music. “My dad could play some mean boogie-woogie, like Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis,” remembers Huber. It was this musical exposure, along with an older brother who played in several rock bands, that provided the backdrop for a lifelong interest in music. However, many years passed before the idea of playing music actually took hold. In 1976, at the age of 19, Huber took a woodwind class at the University of Michigan-Flint during his 2nd year at U of M, covering flute, clarinet and saxophone. “It was the saxophone that interested me” Huber recalls. “I had been going to a lot of jazz concerts since high school, and saw many of the jazz greats up close and personal.” It was this experience that provided Huber with the impetus to pick up the saxophone.
After several years of playing in college jazz ensembles at U of Michigan, CS Mott Community College and Oakland University, Huber started playing in blues and jazz bands around the mid-Michigan area. In 1980, Huber successfully auditioned for a government funded jazz orchestra called the “Peoples Jazz Band.” Founded by Michigan jazz drummer and promoter Joe Freyre, the bands mission was to bring jazz to the people. While funding for the PJB lasted only 14 months, the band was able to play over 200 concerts including a performance and recording at the Montreux International Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland. After the PJB, has come an extended stay with Michigan jazz great Sherm Mitchell from 1984 to present.
Since the early 1980’s, Huber has pursued his music career as a freelance musician, grantwriter, and music instructor. He has performed with the Temptations, The Four Tops, Lou Rawls and Frankie Vallie. Currently he is performing and recording with several mid-Michigan jazz and blues groups including The Blue Hawaiians, Sherm Mitchell, and recently Big Foot Bob and the Toe-Tappers.
